Poverty Simulations

Poverty affects more people in our community than many realize. In Wayne County, Indiana, approximately 17.3% of residents live in poverty, compared to 12.2% statewide. Even more concerning, about 22.9% of children under age 18 in the county are impacted.

Living in Poverty – The Experience is an interactive simulation that allows participants to walk a mile in the shoes of a low-income household. You’ll navigate real-life decisions: paying bills, buying food, handling transportation and healthcare, all while living on a limited budget.

This experience is especially valuable for college students, healthcare professionals, educators, and others working in community-facing roles, helping build empathy and a deeper understanding of the challenges many individuals and families face every day.

The Natco Community Empowerment Center can host poverty simulations at colleges, workplaces, and organizations.

Interested in learning more or scheduling a simulation? Reach out to us at (765) 983-4766. We’d love to connect.

Career Closet

The Natco Community Empowerment Center’s Career Closet is a free resource designed to help individuals feel confident and prepared for job interviews and the workplace. We offer donated, interview-ready attire for men and women, ranging from professional business wear to hospital scrubs, so you can dress for the job you want—without the financial stress.

In addition to clothing, we can help boost your chances of success through resume writing assistance and interview practice, ensuring you’re ready from head to toe. Whether you’re preparing for your first interview or starting a new career path, the Career Closet is here to support your next step.

Free Tax Preparation Services

Through the VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) program, the Natco Community Empowerment Center offers completely free basic tax preparation services to individuals and families. Unlike paid platforms or professional services that can take a significant portion of your refund in fees, VITA ensures every dollar you qualify for stays with you.

This service has helped our community save more than $1 million every year in tax preparation costs. With the rising expense of having taxes professionally prepared, access to trusted, no-cost tax help is a powerful resource for individuals and families working to make the most of their income.

Biz Kids

Through our Biz Kids program, the Natco Community Empowerment Center partners with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Wayne County to provide hands-on financial education to youth in our community. This program introduces kids and teens to money-basics like saving, budgeting, and smart spending, helping them build healthy financial habits early.

By making financial education engaging and age-appropriate, Biz Kids encourages lifelong learning and empowers young people to make confident financial decisions as they grow. Our goal is to give the next generation the tools they need to succeed—today and in the future.
